The Gozo Ministry is looking into the possibility of setting up a hostel in Malta which could be used by Gozitan students who need to commute.

Responding to a parliamentary question by MP David Stellini, Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana gave no further details and no indication by when a decision would be taken.

The idea of a hostel is not new: the Gozo University Group called for one over two years ago, more recently asking for other initiatives like live streaming of lectures.

Gozitan students get a grant of €500 grant, given every three months but with rents in Malta increasing, many are being priced out of the market, the group has argued.

A separate PQ, this time from MP Chris Said to Education Minister Evarist Bartolo revealed there are 910 Gozitan students at the University of Malta (plus 11 who follow lecture through video-conferencing), three at the Junior College, and 266 at Mcast, with a few others scattered across other institutions.
