The government has withdrawn an exemption issued last year through which no development permit would be required for development on hospital grounds.

It also withdrew another legal notice, also issued last year, exempting such development from the need of an environment impact assessment.

In a statement issued today, the government said that this was being done because development plans were too extensive and merited a different planning treatment.

The European Commission had warned last year that the exemption from an environmental impact assessment was “not in line” with EU legislation.
