A one-day conference on science education entitled 'Getting students hooked on science' will be held on February 20 at Monte Kristo Estates, Ħal-Farrug Road, l/o Siġġiewi.

The conference will explore innovative ways to make science a more exciting subject for students. It will mainly focus on how to promote a change in science teaching methodology to bring about a more minds-on, hands-on, authentic approach to science, and delve into novel teaching strategies.

During the conference, Ian Dunne, a British chemist, qualified teacher and now a freelance performer of scientific experiments in UK schools, will share ideas on how science can be made more fun for students.

Another foreign speaker from Florida, US, Alberto Canas, who is world-renowned in the use of technology in education, will give a presentation on the use and importance of concept maps as a teaching and learning tool. There will also be a masters dissertation showcase and other exemples of local good practices in science education.

Thanks to various sponsors, the conference is free of charge. All science educators are invited to take part. Those attending are asked to register by sending an e-mail with their details to info@masemalta.com.

The conference is being held by Mase in collaboration with DQSE, MCST and DMSTE for the first time ever. It is hoped it will become a yearly event.
