Malta will continue to push the idea that there could be no security in Europe without security in the Mediterranean, President Guido de Marco told Former German Foreign Minister Hans Dietrich Genscher yesterday.

Mr Genscher, who is on a private visit, paid an official visit to the President yesterday. He said he was glad to be in Malta and said he looked forward to seeing Malta in the EU soon.

He said he was glad to meet Prof. de Marco, whom he had already met when he was president of the United Nations General Assembly.

Prof. de Marco said he had been impressed by the vision Mr Genscher had on the eve of the reunification of Germany.

He described Mr Genscher as "a statesman who contributed to peace in the world".

Prof. de Marco again expressed his concern about events in the Middle East.

"The effects of what is going on in Palestine go beyond the Mediterranean," he said.
