Luke Scicluna, a 14-year-old student from the Archbishop's Seminary, won the special award in the photographic section of the Young Reporters for the Environment Programme.

He had originally submitted four photos for the national selection. One of them, The Gateway To The Future Of The Natural World - Our World, won the international special prize.

Some 22 countries took part in the programme, with over 100 photos and 60 articles submitted. China won the first and third prize, Slovakia came in second and the special prize went to Malta.

The programme is an international project run by the Foundation for Environmental Education and aims to help students understand issues related to sustainable development and citizenship.

This is the third year Malta took part. The total of participating secondary and post-secondary schools reached 12, with over 70 local entries.
