The festa season is now drawing to a close. Articles have appeared in different media addressing the issue of noise pollution and especially noise produced by petards, some of which this year seemed to have exceeded even sonic boom proportions. As there is no decibel monitoring equipment in place it is not possible to accurately measure what defines loud or dangerous and therefore it is very much down to an individual's perception of what constitutes an unacceptable level of noise pollution.

Last weekend I watched as shock waves from the petards being set off from Għargħur knocked prickly pear fruit off the cactus plants bordering the road in front of my house.

Probably not the most scientific method of measuring but to me this constitutes levels that are beyond the pale.

Rubbish some may say. Correct.

The road is now littered with fallen and fermenting prickly pear fruit.
