The government is offering free aerobic classes to help adults lose weight.

European statistics have put the Maltese at the bottom of the scales when it comes to physical activity. It is estimated that worldwide, almost two million people die annually due to lack of exercise, 600,000 of which in the European region. In a bid to address the problems of obesity and extra weight, the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Department and six local councils will be offering free aerobics classes for people over 20 years of age.

The eight-week programme of twice weekly classes will be held in Floriana, Birkirkara, Mosta, Naxxar, Fgura and Żejtun. Each class will last around 90 minutes. Applications can be picked up from local councils or by calling the department on 2326 6000.

Moreover, a three-kilometre Fun Run is being held in Ta' Qali on March 24 to encourage physical activity.

Yesterday the department launched a 10-page booklet - Ċaqlaq Għal Saħħtek (Move for Your Health) - which gives tips on physical activity.
