Forest fires are raging in Verin, northern Spain, forcing emergency services to cut off various highways in the area as firefighters work overnight.

22 fire squads, 12 helicopters and four airplanes have been deployed.

Spain's Military Emergency Unit (UME) is also providing support with 112 firefighters and 26 vehicles, the defence ministry said.

Due to the proximity of the fire to urban areas, authorities have declared alert level 2, one notch below the highest level.
