The Malta Road Safety Council has expressed concern about an increase in traffic accidents during the second quarter of the year and called for more detailed statistics.

"As a council we would like a further enhancement of such statistics, numbers are just figures, we expect a more scientific approach towards statistical figures, classification of accidents, a more accurate location identifier," it said.

TIMES TALK: 'It's a wonder there aren't more accidents'

Information was also needed on the circumstances of the accidents, conditions of the road, vehicles and drivers to provide a clearer picture and possibly a pattern of such accidents and work to prevent them.

"Recent footage on social media of drivers of both passenger cars and commercial vehicles bluntly ignoring road rules is just unacceptable."

The council also called for a strong presence of the police and wardens and installation of CCTV cameras.
