Manchester City's record-signing Robinho hopes to extend his stay with Santos. The World Cup star has been on loan at the club where he began his career since January but is due back at Eastlands this month.

Robinho played in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil final on Wednesday and will in theory be back in England after playing next week's second leg and an international friendly on August 10.

But the player said: "This is my home. I hope I can stay, but it depends on Manchester City.

"I hope this is not my last game here but, for now, what I have been told is that negotiations are on a standstill and that I have to go back to Manchester."

Goalkeeper charged with murdering ex

Bruno Souza, a Brazilian goalkeeper suspected of having his ex-girlfriend killed, was formally charged with her murder. The footballer, who played for Flamengo, was also charged with kidnapping and hiding a body, police said.

Even though the body of the victim, 25-year-old Eliza Samudio, has not been found, police wrapping up an initial phase of their probe determined that Souza masterminded her death. Seven other people, including an ex-policeman suspected of carrying out the premeditated murder on Souza's orders, have also been charged. Souza's wife was among them.

Samudio, who had a four-month-old baby she claimed was fathered by Souza, was believed to have been demanding child support.

The baby was found in the care of Souza's wife.

Inter to table £20m Mascherano offer

Inter are set to table a £20 million offer for Liverpool's Javier Mascher-ano with the Italy champions' new boss Rafael Benitez insisting on the Argentina midfielder in an attempt to strengthen his squad.

Talks have been ongoing for several weeks now but no official bid has been put forward. Daily Express, however, reported a proposal will be made official this week.

Mascherano has made it clear he wants to leave Anfield this summer and skipped the Reds' pre-season training and the opening Europa League match on Thursday.

The Argentine has also been left out of Roy Hodgson's squad for today's friendly against Bundesliga team Borussia M'gladbach.

Mancini leaves US tour abruptly

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has flown back to Europe during his team's US tour because of a family illness.

Mancini left Baltimore to fly to Italy on Friday, the English Premier League team said. Mancini's father lives in Italy.

"Clearly it's a difficult time for the boss with him having to go back for family reasons," said Brian Kidd, who will manage the team with David Platt in Mancini's absence.

"It's all happened very suddenly."

Manchester City were schedule to complete their exhibition US tour against Inter late last night.

Portugal's Queiroz probed over insults

Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz is to appear before the country's football federation over claims he insulted a team of anti-doping agents.

The Portuguese Football Federation said they want to speak to the national coach, which has not been possible until now as he has been abroad.

Queiroz reportedly insulted anti-doping staff as they tried to carry out unscheduled drug tests during a training camp in Covilha in May.

Portuguese press reports speculated that Queiroz, the former coach of Real Madrid, risked losing his job over the incident.

Queiroz, who is currently on holiday in Mozambique, responded by claiming he was "the victim of an attempted public lynching" and threatened to take the case to FIFA.

Lennon wants schedule changes

Neil Lennon insists Scottish clubs' perennial struggles in Europe would be helped by an earlier start to the season. Celtic and Hibernian both crashed to 3-0 defeats in the first legs of their respective European qualifiers in midweek, their first competitive matches of the campaign.

The results have reopened the debate over whether the Scottish season should begin sooner so sides are able to hit the ground running in Europe.

Lennon said: "I'd be in favour of a winter break, certainly. In my first few years of Celtic, they brought it in. We found it very beneficial as players in the squad.

"As regards playing these important games early, I do think it would be beneficial if we had some game time before we went into these games."

King eager for another chance

Striker Marlon King is determined to rebuild his football career after serving a jail term.

Last October, King was jailed for 18 months having been found guilty of sexual assault and actual bodily harm over an incident in a nightclub.

King's Wigan contract was terminated, however he believes he can have a future in the game.

He said: "I haven't even thought about what league. Because there's no way I'm going to come out and think I'm going to walk into any team. I've got to earn my right.

"You need someone to give you that opportunity. I'd just like to say that given that opportunity I can at least do a job on the field and keep my nose clean off it."
