David Beckham contacted Milan about the possibility of him joining them on loan rather than the other way round, the club's chief executive Adriano Galliani said.

If the deal is agreed, the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder will join the Serie A club on a short-term loan from January.

"The Beckham stuff came from him. It was the English player who made his lawyers phone us having decided to play for Milan," Galliani told Rai television.

"Beckham, very probably, will be with us from the start of January, he will stay with us for two or three months."

It's results that count - Ramos

Former Tottenham manager Juande Ramos has acknowledged it is 'results that count' after the Spaniard was axed by Spurs.

Tottenham were bottom of the table after gaining only two points from their opening eight Premier League matches and also lost 2-0 at Udinese in the UEFA Cup.

With Harry Redknapp appointed as his successor, Ramos is now curious to see if Spurs' decision will pay off.

"The results are what count in football and we all know how this world works," said Ramos.

"Now we just have to see if this decision is the best one for the team."

Pompey refuse to name contenders

Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie has refused to name the possible contenders for the manager's job left vacant by Harry Redknapp.

Former Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce is the early favourite for the position but Storrie said the club are yet to discuss possible replacements.

"I've heard so many names, but it's just too soon to think or contemplate what we're going to do," Storrie said.

Avram Grant, who was previously technical director at Fratton Park, has also been linked with the vacancy.

Novo keen to play for Scotland

Rangers striker Nacho Novo is willing to apply for British citizenship but only if the Scottish FA approach him over playing for Scotland.

The Spaniard last week admitted he would be interested in switching allegiances, sparking widespread debate over eligibility for the national team.

"People have been saying that I have a UK passport," Novo said.

"I don't and I haven't applied for one. Will I? If the SFA contact me and say they are interested, I will do it."

The SFA last week confirmed that George Burley would consider Novo for selection if he obtained a British passport, which he is entitled to apply for having lived in the UK for more than five years.

Gilardino banned for handball

Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino has been banned for two matches for scoring a goal with his arm in Sunday's 3-1 win at Palermo.

The Italian league's sporting judge said in a statement that after reviewing television evidence, it was clear the Italy forward had deliberately used his arm when he slid in for the opening goal in the 19th minute.

The statement said the act was punishable because it was "serious unsporting conduct".

Palermo were furious that the goal was allowed to stand and even more livid that Gilardino ran away to celebrate. He will miss tomorrow's home game with Inter and next Sunday's match at Siena.

CSKA youngster prefers Chelsea

CSKA Moscow youngster Alan Dzagoev has been linked in Spanish media with a move to Real Madrid but it appears Chelsea is his preferred future destination.

The 18-year-old caught the eye of Madrid club after scoring a brace in CSKA's 3-0 UEFA Cup win over Deportivo.

But Dzagoev, admitted that should he move abroad, he would prefer a transfer to Chelsea.

"Basically I like Chelsea more. I have supported the team for four years already," he stated.

Sensi wants more commitment

Roma president Rosella Sensi has ordered the entire squad into a pre-match retreat to prepare for tomorrow's match with Sampdoria.

The Giallorossi's defeat to Udinese, their fifth Serie A defeat in eight games, left them just one point clear of the relegation zone.

"The team will go into a ritiro (retreat) today to prove its love for the Roma jersey and respect towards our fans," Sensi said.

The 3-1 reverse to Udinese was a controversial one with several odd refereeing decisions.

"I am sorry to say this, as it is not in my nature, but the penalty awarded to Udinese and the booking given to Mirko Vucinic for simulation left me stunned by the lack of professionalism on show," Sensi said.
