Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to resist Real Madrid's overtures in favour of an extended stay at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo is at the centre of this summer's biggest transfer saga as Real Madrid have made no secret of their ambition to sign the Portuguese winger.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world right now," Cantona said.

"His style of play fits Manchester United's very well, and the reverse is also true.

"As for him wanting to join Real Madrid, I don't really know his personality.

"Maybe he has valid reasons that drive him to leave United but if he were to leave because of something else, I think he would be doing something absolutely stupid."

Everton boss Moyes to up Moutinho bid

With Andrew Johnson on the verge of completing a £12 million transfer to Fulham, Everton are set to make an improved bid for Portugal midfielder Joao Moutinho.

Johnson was in London to have a medical on Monday after being left out of the squad that flew to the United States for Everton's training camp on Sunday.

Johnson's departure will provide Moyes with the cash to try again for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Moutinho.

Moyes has had an initial £11.8 million offer turned down for the 21-year-old Portugal international, with Sporting seemingly insisting on a £20 million deal.

Spurs baffle Defoe

Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe is baffled as to why his former club Tottenham Hotspur are selling some of their biggest assets this summer.

It has been a hectic period for the White Hart Lane outfit, with the likes of Giovani Dos Santos and Luka Modric joining the club, while Robbie Keane has joined Pascal Chimbonda, Teemu Tainio and Paul Robinson out of the exit door.

Asked if there are difficult times ahead for Spurs under Spanish coach Juande Ramos, Defoe said: "I think so. It's strange because obviously I have left the club and if they want to get rid of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane, then it's going to be difficult for them."

Sorensen on trial at Stoke City

Danish goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen is having a trial with Premier League newcomers Stoke City after being released by Aston Villa.

Manager Tony Pulis told BBC Radio Stoke: "Two or three clubs have been interested in Thomas but he is with us at the minute."

The 32-year-old shotstopper has made over 100 Premier League appearances for both Villa and Sunderland and has won 48 caps for Denmark.

Reports link United with Henry bid

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is mulling over a surprise bid for Barcelona's Thierry Henry amid reports that Tottenham Hotspur are insisting on a British-record transfer fee of £38 million for Bulgarian forward Dimitar Berbatov.

Although the lanky Berbatov, 27, remains Ferguson's number one target, the United manager has also drawn up a list of alternatives.

The short-list is also said to include Blackburn Rovers front man Roque Santa Cruz, who has been aware of interest from United for six weeks, and Ajax striker Klaus Jan Huntelaar.

Henry, 30, would cost somewhere in the region of £15 million after a low-key debut season for Barcelona following his much-publicised move from Arsenal and Ferguson believes the Frenchman could prove to be the ideal foil in attack for Wayne Rooney.

Inter reject Burdisso offer

Inter have rejected a bid from Tottenham for Argentine defender Nicolas Burdisso, reports from Italy claim.

It has been suggested that the arrival of Jose Mourinho as Inter coach could spell the end for Burdisso who was also said to be attracting interest from Fiorentina.

Newcastle United had been seen as favourites to lure Burdisso but there are now growing rumours that Spurs have seen a £4m bid rebuffed.

Dutch ease Babel concerns

Ryan Babel's participation in next month's Olympic Games will not jeopardise his fitness for Liverpool, Foppe de Haan, coach of the Netherlands Olympic team, said.

Babel's club manager Rafael Benitez is concerned that the player's involvement in the tournament would hinder his recovery from an ankle injury sustained just before the start of Euro 2008.

De Haan has moved to allay Benitez's fears, telling reporters that he believes that Babel will benefit from his stay in Asia and that Liverpool have nothing to worry about.

"I am very happy with Ryan Babel. He's a very good player and is important for us at the Olympics," De Haan said.

"Looking to the future for Babel, playing in this tournament should be very good for him as he will go back to his club in good shape."
