In a joint press statement, the Malta Federation of Industry and the Malta Chamber of Commerce & Enterprise expressed concern that the issues retailers have with the National Euro Changeover Committee have resurfaced. This situation is shrouded in rumours of rising prices and inflation, they pointed out.
Both the Chamber and the FOI are concerned about the stance adopted by the GRTU to ignore NECC guidelines on dual pricing and include bank and administrative charges in the price before converting it to euros.
The two organisations made it clear that in such a sensitive period prior to euro adoption, the business community needs to calm fears of rising prices and inflation, and surely not contribute to fuel such situations.
Moreover, as the NECC has stated more than once, banks will be removing all charges as soon as dual pricing becomes obligatory.
The two organisations reiterated the need for the NECC guidelines to be adhered to by all to ensure as seamless a euro transition as possible.
