A flypast of small aircraft will be held on Sunday morning to mark the centenary of flight in Malta.

The low-altitude flypast will start from Luqa between 10 and 10.30am and follow a route over all sites which in the past served as airfields, ending up over the Sliema front.

Leading the flypast will be a restored 1930s Tiger Moth biplane followed by seven microlights of the Island Microlight Club and eight aircraft from aviation schools.

Bringing up the rear will be a Medavia Dash-8, an Italian military mission Ab-212 helicopter, a new AW-139 helicopter and a King Air, both of the AFM.

The first flight, in 1915, took place in Grand Harbour from HMS Ark Royal - a merchant ship converted into an aircraft carrier - in Grand Harbour.

The Ark Royal had stopped at Malta en route to the Dardanelles.

The flight was made on February 13, 1915 by Captain (Flight Cdr) Cecil Francis Kilner of the Royal Marines Light Infantry at the controls of a Short Admiralty 135 biplane.
