Melita has launched its high definition service, making it the first provider to offer it locally.

"This is a big day," said chief executive officer Andre Torriani at the launch last week. "We are proud to be the first operator to offer high-definition television to Maltese and Gozitan families.

"This is a very important milestone in the progression of television services."

The stylish set-top box supports high-definition transmissions and facilitates the pausing, rewinding and recording of live programmes.

Customers can also make use of a redesigned programme guide and a fully-fledged media centre which includes an in-built hard disk.

"We promised to transform television viewing from a linear model controlled by station managers to a personalised experience where our customers can watch what they want, when they want. This is the promise we are delivering today," said Mr Torriani.

To give a taste of the extraordinary picture detail, the netbox is being showcased in Melita's outlets in Paola, Naxxar and Valletta.
