A pacemaker was this morning implanted in former President and Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami.

He is recovering well and is expected to be released from hospital later today.

Dr Fenech Adami was admitted yesterday afternoon after suffering a  heart attack.

His son Beppe told The Times that his father's heartbeat had weakened and slowed down yesterday, causing him to temporarily lose consciousness. The incident happened during lunch with Minister Austin Gatt and former President Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, among others.

Later in the afternoon Mater Dei Hospital said his condition was stable.
