World number one Roger Federer will miss the Swiss Indoor ATP tournament in Basel in two weeks because of a right ankle ligament injury.

The same injury also forced him out of next week's Madrid Masters. He now hopes to return for the season-ending Masters Cup event in Shanghai from November 13-20.

"After bad luck last year with my thigh and now this, I'm extremely disappointed, above all, that I can't play at home for the second straight year in Basel," Federer said on his website.

"I'm hoping to go to Shanghai again perfectly fit," added the Wimbledon and US Open champion.

Federer picked up the injury while training. Last year, he missed the Madrid Masters because of fatigue and was forced out of the Basel event having ruptured a thigh muscle.
