In a world ruled by status symbols, brand names and the lifestyle associated with them, it makes perfect sense for the two consumer favourites to join forces and offer more value added with their association. In fact, in its new image, Perrier, the world's leader in sparkling water, is dressed up in Paul & Joe, the fun fashion label by designer Sophie Albou.

Apart from both being French, Paul & Joe and Perrier have other things in common. "Perrier evokes freshness, which is the key word for Paul & Joe," says Ms Albou. "They are also sparkling, fresh and timeless - a fusion of classic and modern styles... always renewing themselves."

In the new design, the Perrier brand includes drawings and green and gold colour codes. "The animal drawings and the green colour are synonymous with freshness and nature, so it fits in completely with people's image both of Paul & Joe and of Perrier," said Ms Albou. "The partnership seemed fairly obvious to me. By adding gold, I wanted something that would clash, shock people, be right on the edge of 'too much' while still reflecting the current trend towards anything shiny and ostentatious. This year started a period of celebration, complete entertainment and exuberance, the opposite of the minimalist tendencies of 10 years ago.

"I was very happy to see the mark of Paul & Joe on café terraces around the world through these decorated bottles. It was a challenge, a real point of pride, and a project that I loved from the start."

On a bubblier note, Ms Albou's favourite Perrier cocktails are believed to be the Mojitos and Perrier Mint. "When it's very hot out there and I really want to quench my thirst, there's nothing better than a drop of mint with cold Perrier and a slice of lemon on a café terrace. It really is the perfect cocktail, and it's natural too."

Sophie Albou started Paul & Joe, named after her two sons, now 13 and 16, 10 years ago, with a desire to create a different idea of men's fashion, straying from the typical codes at the time, which were grey, austere and minimalist, adding fabrics, colour, prints and freshness. Following requests from customers, the brand moved into women's fashion. "The clothes are easy to wear every day and never too serious - it's a bit of a half-and-half approach, very feminine and yet very masculine at the same time," says Ms Albou.

Perrier originated in Vergeze, in the south of France. Its pleasure and elegance have become a true legend which can be enjoyed at home as well as at bars, cafés and terraces around the world. The brand currently produces more than 800 million bottles of every shape and size.

Perrier will be available in Malta in the gold lamé design in 33cl cans, 33cl bottles and 75cl bottles as from the end of this month.
