A petrol pump attendant was yesterday given a suspended sentence after he ended up in a family argument.

Edmond Thorton, 22, of Gudja, pleaded guilty to damaging a car belonging to Loretu Gatt and slightly injuring Maria Daniela Formosa on Saturday afternoon.

He also admitted to violently resisting a police officer, slightly injuring him and damaging his mobile phone.

Defence lawyer Peter Paul Zammit told the court that his client was involved in a family argument "that had not yet calmed down".

"It was caused by lack of thought," he said, adding that the police controlled the situation.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke jailed Mr Thorton for one year suspended for two and placed him under a supervision order for one year.

She also ordered Mr Thorton not to approach Ms Formosa and Mr Gatt for one year against a personal guarantee of €2,000.

Police Inspector Arthur Mercieca prosecuted.
