Medical Association of Malta general secretary Martin Balzan has been appointed president of the European Union of Medical Specialists of Pulmonology.

Dr Balzan was appointed during the annual meeting of the European Respiratory Society in Barcelona. The organisation looks after the standards of postgraduate training in pulmonology, the speciality which deals with lung and respiratory tract diseases in Europe.

Dr Balzan was also appointed secretary of the European Board of Accreditation in Pulmonology. This board deals with the certification of activities such as conferences, review journals or online modules in the speciality of respiratory medicine in Europe.
