European champions Spain came from a goal down to win 2-1 in Turkey in a World Cup Group Five qualifier last night.

In Bari, Robbie Keane struck late to earn Ireland a 1-1 draw against 10-man Italy in a Group Eight match as England captain John Terry scored five minutes from time to give England a 2-1 win over Ukraine and maintain their 100 per cent record in Group Six.

Semih Senturk put Turkey ahead in the 26th minute, tapping the ball in from a pass by Tuncay Sanli.

Xabi Alonso equalised for Spain with a 63rd-minute penalty after Ibrahim Uzulmez handled.

Spain then grabbed the winner in injury time when substitute Daniel Guiza, who plays for Turkish side Fenerbahce, set up Albert Riera and the winger fired past goalkeeper Volkan Demirel.

The Spaniards lead the group on 18 points while Turkey have eight points with four games remaining.

This win extended Spain's unbeaten run to 31 matches.

At Wembley, Peter Crouch's 29th-minute volley put England deservedly ahead but they lost their way and were caught out when Andriy Shevchenko came off the bench to equalise after 74 minutes.

The game looked to be heading for a draw until Steven Gerrard knocked down a David Beckham free-kick and centre-back Terry stretched out a leg for the winner.

Group leaders Italy, who kept a two-point advantage over second-placed Ireland, had Giampaolo Pazzini harshly sent off for an elbow after just four minutes but took the lead through Vincenzo Iaquinta's tap-in six minutes later.

Keane prodded in the equaliser a minute from time after goalkeeper Shay Given's long punt down field fell kindly for him.

World champions Italy battled bravely but Ireland, coached by former Italy boss Giovanni Trapattoni, eventually made their pressure pay in the pouring Bari rain.

Germany continued their smooth progress towards the 2010 World Cup with a 2-0 win over Wales.

Michael Ballack set the Group Four leaders on their way before an own goal from Ashley Williams condemned John Toshack's young Wales side to back-to-back home defeats.

Germany opened the scoring through Ballack's long-range drive early in the first half and an error from Williams early in the second half gave them all the breathing space they needed.

Ribery winner

Franck Ribery boosted France's qualifying hopes with a second-half goal to give the home side a 1-0 win over Lithuania.

Ribery, who netted the winner in Lithuania last Saturday, poked the ball home from an Andre-Pierre Gignac cross 15 minutes from time.

The result lifted France to second in Group Seven with 10 points from five games, two points adrift of leaders Serbia and one above third-placed Lithuania.

Raymond Domenech's side will next play away to the Faroe Islands in August before taking on Romania and hosting Serbia in September.

Meanwhile, Ebi Smolarek hit four goals to inspire Poland to a 10-0 drubbing of San Marino in a one-sided qualifier yesterday.

Poland, beaten 3-2 in Northern Ireland on Saturday, cruised into a 4-0 half-time lead against Group Three bottom team San Marino thanks to two goals from Rafal Boguski, one by Smolarek and another from Robert Lewandowski.
