EU leaders have decided to convene ‘as soon as possible’ a summit between the 27 EU leaders, the Arab league and possibly the African Union to discuss the current unfolding situation in Libya and what action is to be taken to stop the violence.

Commenting after the end of the summit, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that the summit reaffirmed the position of the 27 member states that Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has to go and that the violence is to be stopped immediately.

He also said that the 27 leaders agreed that talks can start with the established opposition in Libya.

However, he said that Malta will not be giving the Libyan opposition official recognition yet and every country will be allowed to decide on this issue individually.

Dr Gonzi shall be discussing the situation in Libya with the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development on Monday.
