Labour MEP Marlene Mizzi yesterday called on the European Commission to monitor member states’ application of EU laws, as countries lagging behind were placing others at competitive disadvantage.

EU legislation should not be an à la carte menu for members to pick and choose as they like. “Inconsistent transposition is not only a serious hindrance to citizens’ wellbeing but may also hinder member states,” Ms Mizzi said. Countries such as Malta, which were doing their job properly, may be placed at a competitive disadvantage by others with lower regulatory standards.

She was speaking on behalf of the Petitions Committee at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
