Communications Minister Austin Gatt on Tuesday announced in Parliament that the government's request for EU funding to help the renewal of ID cards had unofficially been accepted. This would mean that barring any extraordinary circumstances, the new system of ID cards would be in place by the next general elections.

He was answering a parliamentary question by Leo Brincat (PL).
