"The Council of Ministers 2000/78/EC of November 27, 2000, provides the framework for equality at the workplace with a continuous emphasis on persons having a disability, and the Industrial Relations Act reflects this."

This is how FOI director general Edwin Calleja opened his intervention at the national conference, organised by the Commission Persons with Disability on December 10.

In his address, Mr Calleja explained how social parties in EU member states have been considering the inclusion of measures to integrate disabled people to the world of work including:

¤ discouraging any discrimination and encouraging equal opportunities for people with disabilities in all spheres, including the world of work;

¤ viewing a person for his competences and not his disabilities;

¤ raising the awareness of the rights and state of people with disabilities;

¤ finding solutions to specific needs of each disabled employee; and

¤ strengthening the co-operation between all entities concerned.

In conclusion, Mr Calleja appealed to employers, unions, government, training organisations and NGOs to work together to draw up a strategy based on the realities of our country and its limitations of funds and opportunities.
