The Majjistral Action Group Foundation this evening launched a call for voluntary or private legal entities to apply to create a network for rural tourism in the north.

The chosen entity will benefit from €176,800 - 80 per cent of sum to be used on the network, to promote farmers and their products and provide an alternative type of tourism. It will have to fork out the remaining 20 per cent required.

One way of using the funds would be to improve the building, tools and machinery to enhance the visitors' experience.

Localities falling under the scheme include Lija, Mellieha, Rabat, Mtarfa, Gharghur, Mdina, Mosta, Attard and Zebbug.

The aim is for farmers and herdsmen to take part in the initiative to promote the local produce while making an income.

The head of the European Commission's representation in Malta Martin Bugelli said the Maltese product was rooted in the landscape, climate and environment and it was important that even the Maltese consumer knew how to choose between local and foreign produce.

Interested entities can apply on 2099 2080 or info@leadermajjistral.eu in about two weeks time.
