A 55-year-old English woman died yesterday after finding herself in difficulty while swimming in St George's Bay, St Julians.

The police said that a man in the vicinity noticed that the woman was floating face down in the sea. He immediately carried her ashore where she was assisted by lifeguards.

An ambulance was called to the scene but the woman died in hospital.

Duty Magistrate Antonio Mizzi was informed of the death and appointed a number of experts to assist in the inquest.
