The way English teams have fared in Europe so far this season continues to underline the gulf in class between the top four sides and the rest in the Premier League.

The four contenders in the Champions League have established a competition record this year as they all reached the quarter-finals.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are currently battling it out with the other teams in the last eight - Barcelona, Fenerbahce, Roma and Schalke 04 - for the most coveted prize at club level in the continent.

British soccer followers are now hoping that the latest trend continues as English teams made it to the final in the last three Champions League editions - Liverpool twice (won once) and Arsenal.

It was a different story in the UEFA Cup, however, as the three English challengers fell by the wayside in the last 16 stage.

Rangers are proudly flying the Scottish flag at the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup.

The penalty jinx that on so many occasions let England down in top tournaments such as the World Cup and the European Championship, also took its toll at club level as both Everton and Tottenham lost shoot-outs to Fiorentina and PSV Eindhoven respectively.

Bolton Wanderers, who fielded a depleted side against Sporting Lisbon to rest players for their important matches in their fight for Premier League survival, were edged out 1-2 on aggregate.

Arsenal become the first English club to win in Milan, 2-0, to move into the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Liverpool do the double over Inter with a 1-0 win at the San Siro.

Other results: Manchester United-Lyon 1-0 (2-1 aggregate), Chelsea-Olympiakos 3-0 (3-0). The only UK casualties are Celtic. They succumb 0-1 in Barcelona and bow out 2-4 on aggregate.

Derek Dooley, a legend footballer in Sheffield since he played for both United and Wednesday, dies aged 78.

In the UEFA Cup fourth round, first legs Rangers beat Werder Bremen 2-0 at Ibrox Park.

Other results: Bolton-Sporting Lisbon 1-1, Fiorentina-Everton 2-0, Tottenham-PSV Eindhoven 0-1.

Wembley bound

The Football Association decide that both FA Cup semi-finals this season will be played at Wembley Stadium.

FA Cup holders Chelsea lose to Championship side Barnsley 0-1 at the Oakwell Ground in the quarter-finals of the KO competition. The Blues go down to a lower club in the competition for the first time in 13 years.

At Palmerstone Park, Queen of the South reach the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup for the first time since 1950. The beat Dundee 2-0.

Everton's David Moyes is voted Manager of the Month and Liverpool's striker Fernando Torres takes the award for players.

Another FA Cup shock is the exit of Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium to Championship side Cardiff City 0-2. Three of the 2008 FA Cup semi-finalists hail from the Championship - Barnsley, Cardiff and West Brom. The only Premier League side left is Portsmouth. They eliminated favourites Manchester United.

Scottish Premier League side Gretna move into administration and an immediate ten-point penalty condemns the club to the First Division.

Only Rangers progress to the last eight of the UEFA Cup from the four British teams left in the fourth round. They won 2-1 on aggregate against Werder Bremen.

Other results: Everton-Fiorentina 2-0 (2-4 on penalties), PSV Eindhoven-Tottenham 0-1 (5-6 on penalties), S. Lisbon-Bolton 1-0 (1-2 on aggregate).

At Hampden, Rangers lift the Scottish League Cup, defeating Dundee United 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in extra time.

The FA announce plans to pour £200 million into grassroots football in England under its new five-year National Game Strategy.

Rotherham are placed into administration, only two years after they were saved from liquidation. The Millers will be hit by a ten-point penalty once again.

Fabio Capello names Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand as captain for England's away friendly against France.

In an U-21 friendly at Wolves home ground, Molineux, England draw 0-0 with Poland.

England go down 0-1 to France, where David Beckham earns his 100th cap.

Other friendly results: Luxembourg-Wales 0-2 (Eastwood 2), Northern Ireland-Georgia 4-1 (Lafferty 2, Healy, Thompson), Scotland-Croatia 1-1 (Miller).

Derby are relegated from the Premier League after their 2-2 home draw against Fulham.

MK Dons lift the Johnstone's Paint Trophy (the KO tournament for the lower two divisions), defeating Grimsby 2-0 at Wembley.
