Arsenal and Liverpool drew 1-1 in a thrilling Champions League quarter-final first leg match at the Emirates Stadium yesterday.

Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor headed Arsenal ahead after 23 minutes when he rose unchallenged to power the ball past keeper Pepe Reina from close range following Robin van Persie's cross.

Arsenal's joy was short-lived, however, as Liverpool equalised in the 26th minute when Steven Gerrard surged past three defenders wide on the left and crossed for Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt to slide home.

The Gunners had a clear penalty appeal turned down after the break when Kuyt hauled back Alexander Hleb in the area.

Arsenal were perhaps the better side over the 90 minutes, but Liverpool will hope the trademark Anfield atmosphere will help them into the semi-final for the second successive year after Kuyt's crucial away goal.

But the tie remains in the balance and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will believe his side showed enough to suggest they can also grab a goal at Anfield.

Yesterday's match was the first of three between the teams inside seven days as they face each other again in the Premier League at the Emirates on Saturday before the return leg next Tuesday.

In Turkey, a late goal from Deivid earned Fenerbahce a 2-1 win over Chelsea, his thundering shot making up for an earlier own goal in their quarter-final first leg match.

Chelsea took the lead with a slice of luck in the 13th minute when the Brazilian striker deflected the ball into his own net off Florent Malouda's cross from the left.

Substitute Colin Kazim-Richards equalised for the home side in the 65th minute when he collected a pass from Mehmet Aurelio and fired a shot beyond Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini to the delight of the delirious home fans.

Deivid struck Fenerbahce's winner in the 81st minute with a powerful long-distance drive.
