The number of persons in employment increased by 0.4 per cent in the eurozone and by 0.3 per cent across all 28 member states in the second quarter of 2016 compared with the previous quarter, new figures show. 

Seasonally-adjusted Eurostat estimates show that employment increased by 0.4 per cent in both zones.

In Malta, the number of people employed increased by 0.7 per cent when compared to the previous quarter. When compared to the same period last year, growth stood at 2.8 per cent. 

Among member states for which data is available, Estonia (+1.7 per cent), Ireland (+1.1 per cent) and Lithuania (+1.0 per cent) recorded the highest increases in the second quarter compared with the previous quarter. A decrease was observed in Croatia (-0.4 per cent), while employment remained stable in Finland.

Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, employment increased by 1.4 per cent in the eurozone and by 1.5 per cent in the EU28 (after +1.4 per cent in both zones in the first quarter of 2016).

Eurostat estimates that, in the second quarter of 2016, 232.1 million men and women were employed in the EU28 - the highest level ever recorded. Of those, 153.3 million were in the euro area.
