Ya Habibi Academy of Middle Eastern Dance will be holding workshops in oriental and Egyptian folklore dance next month led by Maria Aya.

Specialising in folkloric styles, Ya Habibi said Ms Aya is known for her authentic Egyptian baladi style, her deep emotional connection with tarab music and sense of humour.

She has led workshops all over Europe, and is one of the featured teachers at the Nile Group Festival of Cairo.

The workshops will be held on May 20, 21 and 22 and will cover technique, choreography and theory.

Choreography workshop topics include Megance, Om Kalthoum, Sha’abi (Baladi style) and Ghawazee. Workshops are open to students of bellydance or experienced dancers.

Anyone interested in learning more about oriental dance and Arabic folklore can attend the lecture on history, theory, music and costuming on May 20.

A hafla (bellydance dinner party) featuring an oriental dance show by Ms Aya, students of the Ya Habibi School and its founder Jameelah will be held on May 21.
