A huge wave caused a 33-year-old foreigner's death yesterday as he took photos of the rough sea on the picturesque Dwejra coast in Gozo.

Bagladeshi-born Sharker Mohammed, who holds a Belgian passport and works in Denmark, died at Dwejra when a wave slammed his body onto the rocks.

Mr Mohammed was standing on top of a free-standing rock when the wave struck, according to witnesses.

It is thought that he lost his balancebefore landing face down on the razor sharp rocks below. He died on the spot. A Russian-born woman who was with him suffered slight injuries.

Mr Mohammed, who was studying English in Malta, was in Gozo on a day's trip. Rescuers from the Civil Protection Department were called to the scene and, with difficulty, they managed to recover the man's body.

Malta and Gozo yesterday experienced strong winds, gusting to Force six or seven.

The police are investigating the incident.
