The number of births in Malta last year dropped by 1.2 per cent on 2008, according to the annual report for 2009 of the National Obstetrics Information System.

In its report, the NOIS, which is in its 12th year, said that since it was set up 1999 and 2000 were the years with the most deliveries, followed by a trend of decreasing births until 2005, when figures started increasing again.

While there was an 8.5 per cent (330) increase in births from 2007 to 2008, 2009 showed a drop of 1.2 per cent (48) births on 2008.

In 2009 there were 4,112 registered deliveries (4,180 total births), of which 3,871 deliveries (3,937 births) occurred in Malta and the remaining 241 (243 births) in Gozo.

Most deliveries, 99.8 per cent (4,102), were in a hospital.
