The driver of a Roman Catholic bishop stabbed to death in southern Turkey was today charged with murder.

A court in Iskenderun heard that Murat Altun has been detained pending trial on accusations he stabbed 63-year-old Luigi Padovese.

The decision comes a day after the apostolic vicar in Anatolia, Adana, was killed.

Authorities say a post-mortem examination is expected on the bishop's body after he was attacked outside his home in the southern Mediterranean port of Iskenderun.
