A man who allegedly punched the deputy mayor of Pembroke in the face was yesterday granted bail against a personal guarantee of €25,000.
Nazzareno Seguna, 56, a driver of Żebbuġ pleaded not guilty to punching Alfred Mazzitelli who reportedly tried to stop him from dumping rubble in Mediterranean Road, Pembroke on Saturday afternoon.
Police Inspector Trevor Micallef said Mr Mazzitelli had spotted the accused trying to dump the rubble and asked him to stop. An argument ensued and as Mr Mazzitelli was writing down the number plate of the vehicle, the accused allegedly punched him.
Mr Seguna pleaded not guilty to attacking and slightly injuring Mr Mazzitelli, breaching the peace and illegally disposing of rubble.
After granting bail against a personal guarantee of €25,000, the magistrate asked defence lawyer Ian Farrugia to explain clearly to his client that "bail was not a punishment as generally wrongly perceived".
