Alternattiva Demokratika joined the fray and raised its voice again about the divorce issue after a change of leadership (July 28). Reckoning on the number of votes polled in the last general election, AD cannot claim to speak for the nation.

Moreover, neither the Nationalist Party nor the Malta Labour Party (under its former leadership), which AD is urging not to sit "on the fence", made a political issue of divorce or placed it on their agenda in their electoral programmes or campaign.

In a democratic country, the minority has the right to express its opinions, but the people's majority verdict wins the day.

Let us first strenghten our family ties in Malta. Divorce is no solution; it creates more problems than it solves besides adding to the deficit in the national coffers. Some countries where divorce is legal are having serious doubts about the benefits of divorce.

The issue should be submitted to a referendum. The is no hurry, however; Malta has enough problems to solve in the immediate future.

It is not the intention of the undersigned to pursue further correspondence on this subject.
