Updated at 6.30pm: Adds PL statement

Former Partit Demokratiku leader Marlene Farrugia on Tuesday dismissed Adrian Delia as an Opposition leader lacking in credibility.

Fielding questions during a press conference, Dr Farrugia said Malta was in a leadership vacuum as neither leaders of the two main parties were credible.

PD formed a coalition with the PN prior to the June 2017 election. The coalition was dissolved soon after Dr Delia was elected as PN leader.

Dr Farrugia said the moment Dr Delia washed his hands of the coalition, he had turned his back on the battle for good governance, social justice and the environment.

This did not mean PD would not work with the PN just because its leader was not credible, she said.

She said there was a clear split between “DeliaPN” and those who still believed in the Forza Nazzjonali coalition.

Dr Farrugia said this coalition and its ideals were still alive and kicking.

“Delia can say what he likes, he can never kill the enthusiasm for the good governance battle”, Dr Farrugia said.

Dr Farrugia also appealed to the people in the Labour government who were still loyal to the party’s principles to do the right thing.

She said the government had entered into too many contracts which had benefited just a select few.

Dr Farrugia said Projects Malta, the entity under Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi which handled all public-private partnerships, was not negotiating deals in the national interest.

She said the three hospitals handed to VGH should be given back to the people.

VGH had clearly breached its contractual obligations, and the government had not even bothered to inform doctors that the concession was being transferred to another company.

The concessionaire had not honoured its promise to invest €200 million.

This had endangered other projects like the Barts medical school in Gozo, the PD MP said.

She said if the hospitals were to be run by a private investor, negotiations should take place in a transparent manner in order to ensure the best possible deal was reached.

PD leader Anthony Buttigieg reminded how a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been signed with VGH six months before the tender for the concession.

The Sunday Times of Malta recently revealed the names of the investors who were parties to the MoU, which was signed on the government's behalf by Economy Minister Chris Cardona.

Dr Buttigieg said that in order for taxpayers to be guaranteed the best possible deal, all proposals should have been properly analysed prior to a MoU being signed.

In a statement, the PL said the disagreement between Dr Delia and Dr Farrugia was confirmation that the PD/PN coalition had been one of confusion.

Even if Dr Delia tried to rid himself of this confusion he would remain stuck with it because the Nationalist Opposition had to carry the bad decisions taken in recent months, both before and after the election, for the coming years.
