I am a regular cyclist (it's part of my rehab ritual following a knee injury) and believe me it is dangerous to cycle on Malta's roads.

Much of the danger comes from those stupid, reckless and selfish drivers (potential killers) we have running loose on the roads! The other day I could not believe what I saw: a mad truck driver speeding up a narrow hill with his mindset being "I am hooting my horn. I have a truck - get out of my way or else...!"

Clifford Micallef was an excellent person who rode his bike with experience and caution. What a sad loss for his dear family.

The authorities concerned need to get working seriously to make cycling in Malta safer. Clifford is not the first cyclist to get killed and probably will not be the last as more and more people will eventually turn to cycling in the future, some in an effort to beat the even greater congestion and parking problems we will have on our roads, others to keep in good health and fitness.

It is essential that serious action is taken to make the roads of Malta reasonably safe for cycling, rather than the quasi-death traps they are, mostly due to the selfish and negligent mentality of some, and the lack of education, prudence, respect for life and limb of others, and also the non-existence of safety awareness campaigns.

The relevant authorities must act effectively and fast, so that the senseless killing or injuring of cyclists by motorists on the roads will stop.
