The Bicycle Advocacy Group said this morning that it was appalled by yesterday’s hit and run on the Coast Road which left a German cyclist slightly injured.

It asked why the Coast Road was never marked with advisory cycle lanes linking the existing ones

“This would help to raise awareness amongst drivers to expect cyclists, while drivers could still drive in them if unoccupied by a rider,” it said.

It added that it expected anyone involved in a traffic accident to stop and help.

Yesterday’s incident, it said, was a reminder of the accident that claimed the life of cyclist and philanthropist Cliff Micallef, which also took place on the Coast Road.

Although the Coast Road is due to be upgraded cycle lanes are expected to be included, this will take some time and temporary measures are needed, the group said.
