Daniel Briffa, 25, of Birkirkara, was today convicted of the serious injury of Nizar Mustafa Al-Gadi and condemned to a two-month jail term suspended for a year.

Al-Gadi was the husband of lawyer Margert Mifsud, whom he stands accused of murdering.

During the procedings, the court heard that Briffa stabbed the Libyan over a cycling incident. He pleaded self-defence.

Lawyer Chris Cardona said Briffa used a knife because he was afraid of Al-Gadi, who became aggressive during an argument over damage allegedly done to the Libyan's car. The incident happened on February 15, 2009.

The Libyan allegedly confronted Mr Briffa at Ta' Paris in Birkirkara and accused him of hitting his car's mirror while cycling.
