Finance Minister Tonio Fenech recently appointed a Consumer Affairs Council.
The council has a very important role to play in consumer matters.
It includes members who can contribute towards the promotion of consumer interests thanks to their experience.
Moreover, there is also a member who represents traders and another one representing the consumer association/s.
The director of the Consumer Affairs Department is ex officio the deputy chairperson of the council.
The functions of the council are wide-ranging but its main role is that of advising the minister in the formulation of policy to be followed by the Director of Consumer Affairs, as well as in respect of measures for the promotion and protection of consumer interests. The council will monitor the working and enforcement of laws that directly or indirectly affect consumers. It also keeps under review trading and business practices relating to the supply of goods and services to consumers.
Marcel Pizzuto has been appointed chairman of the council.
