A man who had caused over €1,165 (Lm500) in damage to his former girlfriend's car was yesterday conditionally discharged for three years.

Andrè Buhagiar, 27, of Luqa was originally charged with damaging the car, stealing the car stereo, slightly injuring his former girlfriend, insulting her and relapsing. The court, presided over by Magistrate Lawrence Quintano, heard that the couple had been involved in an argument that got out of hand. When the argument was over, Mr Buhagiar approached a policeman in the road and told him what had just happened and admitted to damaging the car.

The court noted that no evidence was produced to prove that the stereo was stolen and that the alleged victim had been slightly injured by Mr Buhagiar. In view of this, the court could only find Mr Buhagiar guilty of damaging the car by his own admission.

He was subsequently conditionally discharged for three years.

Police Inspectors Martin Sammut and Carmelo Abdilla prosecuted.

Lawyers Anġlu Farrugia and Edward Gatt were defence counsel.
