A Syrian who worked as a bus driver for the former public transport operator, Arriva, was today sentenced to 40 hours of community work after he was found guilty of hitting a policeman on his helmet in August 2011.

Mahammed Hamdan, had been involved in an argument with a traffic policeman in Cirkewwa, who stopped him for driving his wife's car without a rear number plate.

Although the incident was captured on CCTV, the footage was never presented to the court as evidence.

In a pre-sentencing report, the court was requested to impose community work rather than a fine or a prison sentence.

Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona upheld this request and ordered the man to carry out 40 hours of work in the community.
