Non-governmental organisations will this year be able to apply for a share of a €280,000 co-financing fund announced by the government.

It is intended to help NGOs with projects they would usually have to fork out money for themselves.

The fund is also open to civil society and three projects were co-financed last year.

Fair Competition Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said noted that the criteria for eligibility this year were "less bureaucratic", making it easier for NGOs to apply. NGOs usually had to finance 15 per cent of a project they intended to undertake to be eligible for EU funding. They sometimes had trouble paying for this share and, therefore, the government took it upon itself to fund a large part of this percentage to ensure that "good ideas do not get thrown away and instead become a reality".
