People who are unable to speak can still communicate using alternative means such as sign language, gestures or systems based on symbols, or by enhancing their existing abilities through electronic communication devices.

Recently, the Speech-Language Department launched the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) club at the Department for Social Welfare Standards. The club aims to provide AAC users with a forum for discussion and an opportunity to interact with other such users, both locally and internationally.

The launch was addressed among others by Parliamentary Secretary Joseph Cassar, Rita Micallef, department manager and speech and language pathologist Veronica Montanaro.

For more information or to register call the department on 2123 0822 or e-mail speechlanguage@gov.mt.
