The current petrol station policy had been approved by the government despite a warning by developers that it would have a negative environmental impact.

In a statement, the Malta Developers Association referred to Environment Minister Josè Herrera’s announcement that he had ordered a revision to the policy.

It said that when the Planning Authority was drawing up the current policy, it had not accepted the MDA’s suggestions and went on to approve it.

The MDA also pointed out that frequent changes in development policies created an undesirable situation.

It said there were people who invested in land that qualified according to the existing policy for a petrol station to be built upon and, when the policy would be changed, they would find out they were misguided.

Any change in the policy should safeguard the interests of investors who applied and signed contracts under the current policy, the MDA said.
