I refer to my letter ‘Point of no return’ (March 8). I would like to clarify to readers that I do not agree with the first two sentences because they are quotations expressed by other correspondents. They were not indicated as such.

In the meantime I would like to avail myself of this opportunity to pinpoint one of the reasons why the Catholic religion is no longer central to cultural activity.

Let us pause a while, raise a good laugh and ruminate on the following joke:

There were three sextons discussing the problem of cockroaches in the nooks and corners of the sacristy furniture.

The first one said that all his efforts to eliminate them were in vain.

The second one said that he even used pesticides and fumigation but to no avail.

The third one quipped that he had a solution to the problem. He administered the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation on these pests and it was their sudden death sentence.

This is an evident reference to the fact that our children do not attend their catechism lessons or do not receive further religious instructions after their Confirmation. This can have a telling effect on the future outlook of their spiritual life.

How many households have a compendium of the catechism of the Catholic Church to consult and serve them as a concise guide to the full range of the Catholic faith?

The bastions of moral high ground are being gradually demolished and an abrupt stop to this would be welcome and beneficial to the island’s well-being. I have a shudder of fear about whether, when the Son of Man comes, he will find faith on the earth.
