A 28-year-old man was given a suspended jail term yesterday for ignoring orders to close down an illegal car valeting service.

Allan Magro, who changed his Birkirkara garage into a car valeting workshop in March 2009, ignored enforcement notices issued by the Malta Environment Planning Authority to restore the place to its original use because he had no permission to make the change.

Among documents exhibited in court, was a letter from Mr Magro to the Mepa chairman denying he was causing noise or environmental damage and in so doing admitted he was using the garage as an illegal car wash.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit fined Mr Magro €1,200 and handed down an 18-month jail term suspended for two years.
