A cannabis smoker caught when the police saw him driving erratically was today jailed for 21 months and fined €500 for being in possession of 140 grams of the drug.

Sean Farrugia, 24, from Birkirkara, was stopped by the police on January 10.

In his car the police found plastic wrap, a crusher, a packet of cigarette papers and roaches. He told the police he bought in bulk to save money as he was a heavy smoker.

Magistrate Ian Farrugia said that the amount he was found carrying was preoccupying. He noted that the accused had admitted during proceedings that the drugs were not for his exclusive use.

The magistrate said he wanted to send a message that people caught with drugs which were not for their exclusive use would, most certainly, go to jail.

Mr Farrugia needed to take over his life and reform, the magistrate said.
