Nadur council, in collaboration with Caritas Malta, last Sunday organised a candle-lighting event as part of the Caritas campaign ‘Ilqa l-Isfida: Ġib il-Faqar fix-Xejn’ (Accept the challenge: eradicate poverty) to mark International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Nadur joined other European countries in the ‘Ten Million Stars’ event organised by Caritas Europa. Parishioners took candles to be lit during the activity at St Peter and St Paul Square. A collection was also made to channel funds to people living in poverty.

The Nadur Youth Council collected signatures throughout the day for a Caritas Europa petition against poverty and social exclusion, which will be presented to the European Commission.

Guitarists Joe Portelli and Joseph Azzopardi sang various love songs, while Joseph Attard gave a Power Point presentation on poverty.

Nadur mayor Miriam Portelli said the event was intended to show solidarity with people in need, not only in their locality, but also in Malta and elsewhere.
